The Story

Why join a choir?

There is a large and growing body of research on the physical, emotional, social and mental benefits of singing (and laughing!) Both have been found to increase the body’s speed of healing, and to protect from illness by boosting the immune system. Both reduce adrenaline and cortisol levels, promoting relaxation and better sleep, supporting blood flow and increased oxygen. The research is broad and varied, indicating holistic healing for mind and body and a beneficial impact on overall health. Further, both singing and laughter induce strong bonds between people taking part, literally flooding the body with serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins – the body’s natural painkillers, mood-enhancers, sense of affection and connection, and catalysts to creativity and positive thinking. Many Hafren & Llanidloes choir members report improved wellbeing and sleep as a result of coming to choir and love the impact it has on their feelings of happiness and positivity.

What happens in a session?

Our choir rehearsals begin with gentle stretching, breathing and laughter exercises to relax the body ready for singing. Every rehearsal includes playful but carefully targeted technical work, meaning that whatever your starting point as a singer you will develop your musicianship skills, vocal technique and confidence. Nobody is ever asked to sing alone or put on the spot and newcomers often remark on the warm, supportive atmosphere. You will learn songs from around the world, from all eras and genres including contemporary, and develop flexible technique to match the culture of each song. There is no sheet music and everything is sung a capella (unaccompanied), which supports the development of excellent listening and blending skills. You will be surprised at the sound you are making in a short time.

Who is it for?

Llanidloes and Hafren Community Choirs are for everyone who loves to sing, regardless of whether you have any experience or think you can sing in tune. Sessions are for teens/adults of any age and ability who are enthusiastic singers or are keen to give themselves a mental or physical health boost. There are no auditions, every individual improves from their own starting point, and everyone is genuinely welcome. Sessions provide the opportunity to develop your voice in a safe, laughter-filled environment, make friends and broaden your social and musical experiences. For anyone who wants to perform there are plenty of invitations to local events and concerts including festivals, celebrations, pubs, theatres, galleries, care homes, each other’s weddings or special occasions, artistic collaborations, etc. Almost all performances are informal, often with shared food, full of fun, for friends and family, and usually include audience participation. Equally, choir members are not expected to perform and if you just want to come to rehearsals you are very welcome. Concessions are self-selected to ensure that payment is not a bar to attendance. Please ask.
