WELCOME! So glad you made it.

Hi, I’m Charlotte Woodford. I am a community choir director, intuitive vocal coach, laughter yoga teacher, classical pianist, cellist, improviser and composer. I love taking musical inspiration from all genres, and I love to laugh.

Laughter and singing are both excellent for helping people to relax, connect and have a great time together. If I have a vocation in life, then that gets pretty close to it. They are also tools to deep, therapeutic, spiritual and transformative experiences. More recently, I have begun to offer sessions at this deeper level, attuning intuitively to the person in front of me, and holding a more therapeutic space. So sessions are tailored to the setting and the individual. Your aim might be to build a greater ability to pitch, to understand and feel rhythm or pulse or to pass a music exam, or it might be to go on an emotional or spiritual journey. We will work in a way that feels not only nurturing and safe, but also developing and expansive, unlocking your voice and personal or musical growth as you wish.

I am really excited to build and be part of supportive communities of people developing confidence, creativity, skill and joy, whether through choir or our new (and hopefully annual) Newtown Vocal Festival. Whether you are feeling lonely, simply enjoy connecting to others, are yourself a community builder or in need of a boost to your wellbeing, you may just love it - even if you don't think you are particularly interested in singing or music. Many participants describe themselves as ‘non-singers’! You are very welcome to come and nurture the creative, playful side of you, and will be warmly welcomed just as you are - no expectations!

I came across solfa (the do re mi of music) in my twenties, and after years of battling through music theory it was life changing. It is a simple, accessible way to get into the language of music. Like the alphabet or numbers it is not too hard to learn, but it can also go to any level of complexity. I love sharing it, and sprinkle it through most of my sessions as well as offering dedicated solfa courses.

It genuinely doesn't matter what your starting point is, or what you think about your own skill, age or ability. If anything you find here piques your interest, I am looking forward to hearing from you!

My degree was Music & Philosophy at the University of Birmingham, majoring in piano recital. I am a Da Capo Foundation registered teacher and partner (solfa and music teaching expertise), and a Vocal Process Accredited Teacher (continued CPD in vocal coaching, anatomy and physiology of the voice). I have engaged in many years of therapy through the discipline of psychodrama, which has shaped how I facilitate, mentor and coach. I am also a member of the Natural Voice Network.
Music fosters intelligence, creativity and communication. It helps us with emotional regulation, socialising and bonding - many of the essential elements of being human.
Your voice is as unique as your body shape and personality - because the voice is an expression of our physical characteristics and the individual we are. We can become vocally proficient by developing vocal technique and musicianship. Yet singers that make us go WOW or move us to tears are those that are also deeply connected to what they are singing.
So to get the most pleasure from your unique vocal instrument you will develop vocal technique and musical skill in a relaxed, joyful environment to encourage creativity, happiness, fun, vocal freedom and expression.

You may choose to develop and deepen your skills in:
-
listening
-
pitching
-
expression
-
sight reading
-
composing & improvising
-
vocal technique
-
performance
-
breathing, health & wellbeing
-
teaching & facilitating in your unique style
-
laughter & connection
-
self-reflection, compassion and self-clarity
