Singing For Lung Health

Why should I sing to improve my lung health?

Session participants find this class extremely beneficial to their breathing and overall sense of wellbeing, and attend week after week. There is a large and growing body of research on the physical, emotional, social and mental benefits of singing (and laughing!) Both have been found to increase the body’s speed of healing, and to protect from illness by boosting the immune system. Both reduce adrenaline and cortisol levels, promoting relaxation and better sleep, supporting blood flow and increased oxygen. Both singing and laughter induce strong bonds between people taking part, literally flooding the body with serotonin and endorphins – the body’s natural painkillers, mood-enhancers, sense of affection and connection, and catalysts to creativity and positive thinking. You do not need to have any previous experience of singing or be able to sing in tune to take advantage of the numerous positive benefits. Anyone with a lung condition is welcome.

What happens in a singing for lung health session?

Each session begins with gentle seated exercises to loosen and stretch the body, bring awareness to the breathing, encourage laughter and a state of positive relaxation. As the session progresses you will be taken through simple vocal exercises to improve the efficiency of your breath use when vocalising, and techniques to develop your voice. You will learn simple, beautiful songs in unison and harmony and there is always time for laughter and a check-in. Each session finishes with tea, coffee and homemade molasses biscuits.

Who is it for?

Sessions are for anyone with a lung condition, or who wants to improve their wellbeing. Movement, vocal and breathing exercises are gentle and limited, but provide a deep workout for your lungs. Expect to leave the sessions feeling energised and relaxed. Prior singing experience is not necessary. Neither is being able to sing in tune. The focus of the sessions is not to turn you into a ‘singer’, although regardless of your starting point, you will develop vocal confidence and ability. The fundamental aim is to give you all the joy and health benefits which practising deep breathing, laughter and singing bring to your mind and body.

It is a very enjoyable, non judgemental space to fill our lungs and sing and have fun with a lovely group of people even though I don't think I can sing.

Gerry Hill

I was recommended this Group in 2022 and finally took the plunge and joined in January 2023. I have learnt through our initial exercises to open up my Lungs and breathe in a relaxing atmosphere. Charlotte Woodford has given me the courage to Air my Voice even though I can't actually Sing still. Thank you so much.
