Rachel Ellis

Charlotte is a knowledgeable, deeply compassionate, and supportive singing teacher who works in a strongly intuitive way. I was a complete voice novice when I started with her. I was very unconfident - in my childhood I used to lose my voice a lot and had years of speech therapy. I had always been told by teachers and other adults, as well as peers, I couldn’t sing.

When I found Charlotte in my mid forties she had to start from scratch with me - teaching me how to pitch, what on and off pitch feels like and what harmonising feels like. But most of all she helped me to overcome my inhibition to make sound and to be able to laugh when the sound I make is off. It’s been so liberating! After a summer of lessons with Charlotte I felt confident enough to join the community choir which is a miracle (when I told my mum I joined a choir her first reaction was ’but you can’t sing!’. I now love singing in community - it’s such a physical and emotional experience. The added benefit of the singing lessons is that my speaking voice has also improved which has helped me at work.

Charlotte uses the solfa method. I wish I had come across it when I was a child. It is very intuitive and has given me a sense of spacial awareness of my voice.
