Vocal Coaching

Are you interested in some targeted 1-2-1 sessions to increase your confidence, improve your singing voice, work towards a specific singing or musical goal, or simply in order to feel ready or able to join a choir? Sessions range from 20 to 60 minutes and usually take place at Charlotte's home or on Zoom. Book for a one off, ad hoc as suits you, or a regular weekly or fortnightly lesson. Coaching can be online or in-person. If you do not live locally, consider coming on a tailor-made retreat.

DO I NEED TO COME WITH A GROUP/FRIENDS TO WORK WITH?
You can either let me know the names of the people who will be in your small group, or come as an individual who will be placed with others.

WHICH GROUP SHOULD I JOIN?
Beginner - new to singing, looking to grow confidence and foundational skills
You haven't done a great deal of singing, and are not completely sure whether you always sing in tune or whether you can hold a line on your own. You'd like to have some fun singing in smaller groups with more individual focus but don't necessarily want to solo.
Intermediate - Often sing, looking to develop technique, ready to solo in small groups
Small group of 3 or 4 people
You have been singing for quite some time, whether this is in the choir or in the car or the shower! You are ready to hold a line on your own, but don't necessarily want to do anything too complex or to work too hard at home. You are keen to understand your own voice better, and to improve your technique. You are willing to solo - at least during the sessions (with your small a cappella group). You would like to develop your ability to hold a line, solo, blend, pitch etc. You may well be interested in working towards informal performance, and to increasing your confidence.
Advanced - Sing regularly and over years, happy to solo, committed to practising technique and material
Small group of 3 to 5 people
You are a fairly experienced singer, and even if you haven't had lessons, you have been doing choir/karaoke/singing at home or out and about regularly a handful of times a week. You are committed and keen to improve. You want to work at home as well as during sessions and don't want to do the note bashing during contact time, as you will largely have your part/s learnt on your own. You want to improve your vocal technique and are keen to have vocal exercises to practice. Although you may be nervous, you are keen to improve your confidence and to take/create performance opportunities. You want to work to a high standard, learn how to connect to your group, how to solo and blend, and to produce beautiful, polished music.

FEE
Please talk to me if you would like to take part but money is a concern.
I am not a choir member: 5 x 1 hr sessions = £60

Rachel Ellis

Charlotte is a knowledgeable, deeply compassionate, and supportive singing teacher who works in a strongly intuitive way. I was a complete voice novice when I started with her. I was very unconfident - in my childhood I used to lose my voice a lot and had years of speech therapy. I had always been told by teachers and other adults, as well as peers, I couldn’t sing.

When I found Charlotte in my mid forties she had to start from scratch with me - teaching me how to pitch, what on and off pitch feels like and what harmonising feels like. But most of all she helped me to overcome my inhibition to make sound and to be able to laugh when the sound I make is off. It’s been so liberating! After a summer of lessons with Charlotte I felt confident enough to join the community choir which is a miracle (when I told my mum I joined a choir her first reaction was ’but you can’t sing!’. I now love singing in community - it’s such a physical and emotional experience. The added benefit of the singing lessons is that my speaking voice has also improved which has helped me at work.

Charlotte uses the solfa method. I wish I had come across it when I was a child. It is very intuitive and has given me a sense of spacial awareness of my voice.
